How would you sum up a guy like J.P. Minnis?
J.P. is a person who bets on himself in ever chapter of his life book. Early in his career he worked in a 100% commission sales job which taught him the discipline and grit to start Kompass Funding a finance company in Kansas City. JP has a passion for helping shape other and shared this in his book Journey to Leadership, Timeless Lessons for Today’s Leaders. However, JP never does it alone. He always has a supporting staff of solid business partners an encouraging wife along family and friends who cheer him on his journey. This has led to his new venture J. Patrick & Co. JP’s personal passion starts with his family, then move into exercise, style, watches and sitting around the firepit with a cocktail, cigar and laughs with family and friends.
Describe your personal style in five words or less.
Relaxed Classic Old School Preppy
It might appear these five words contradict themselves, but it’s how I approach my style. On the rare occasion when a suit is required. I’ll wear a Sid Mashburn Air Force blue suit (Classic) with a knit tie and suede Alden loafers (Preppy). All of this must fit properly and allow me to move freely (relaxed).
What do you love about J. Patrick & Co.?
I love curating products with my partner Patrick Carr, that can be handed down for generations. Patrick and I have almost identical style (just compare our answers to these questions) which makes brainstorming ideas fun and easy. Running Kompass Funding and a having a busy family life allows me work on JPC as our passion project company.
Three favorite brands, currently?
I’m obsessed with Sid Mashburn! I’m on their site daily and had a chance to visit the Dallas location where Roger Sydenstricker helped me depart with some of my hard-earned money (recommendation, get the Ghost Blazer). WM Brown Magazine and content Matt Harnek puts out into the world. I read his magazine cover to cover right when it arrives in my mailbox. Lastly is Holderness & Bourne. This company reminds me of JPC, two friends starting a company to solve a problem. H&B’s golf shirts are the best fitting and performing tops from a guy who plays way too much.
Best thing you bought for under $20.00.
I’m a pen and paper guy. I love writing with Pentel EnerGel 0.7. The pens come in the popular blue and black ink along with a few alternative colors. I prefer the Navy and Gray; it is a slight change from the norm.
Best thing you bought over $100 recently….
Sid Mashburn’s Navy Ghost Blazer
Something you’re looking to buy at the moment.
The weather is turning hot in Kansas City. To combat the heat and still look stylish, I’m looking at a granite gray seersucker sports coats from Haspel in New Orleans.
What was the item that you thought about the longest before buying?
Alden Snuff Suede Loafers. I have a hard time sizing loafers and I did not want to keep sending them back, so I read all the blogs on the historic Alden shoe and love them.
Do you shop more online or in person?
I prefer to shop in person for clothing to get the size and fit just right. However, this is not always convenient. I tend to focus on the details that are not always identified in online pictures. This leads to a few trips to UPS to return items.
Give us one shopping tip or hack you can let everyone know about.
Know what you own, before you make a purchase. My wife will say, “Did you just buy another blue shirt?”
Necessary Extravagance?
Lovat Cashmere Crewneck Sweater from Sid Mashburn
Is there something you buy multiple of (either by design or by default)
When I find a pair of slacks or shorts that fit well and are comfortable. I will purchase multiple colors.
What five items should all gentlemen own?

- Quality business card and stationery (Moo.com and American Stationary)
- A watch that will work for any occasion (Rolex 39mm Explorer is a good option)
- A navy-blue tailored suit (classic)
- Good pair of exercise shoes that are used often (the best accessory we can own is our health)
